SALARY RANGE: $16.91 to $17.95 per hour
Where candidates lack the full qualifications, an appointment may be made at a lower classification and salary level

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

• Interpret and portray the life, work, skills and activities of an 1860’s family member, including domestic duties such as food preparation and preservation, laundry, housekeeping or cleaning, making candles, and handwork skills (sewing, needlework, knitting, quilting, rug-making, etc.).
• Interpret and portray the life, work and activities of a 1860’s store keeper, school teacher and/or tavern worker
• Provide visitors with information about artifacts, structures, settings and activities throughout the site, ensuring the resolution of visitor concerns or questions
• Instruct adults and children participating in various experiential programming such as residential camps and school programs
• Ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:
• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Service Sector check).

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
• An understanding of the historical context of all activities performed and the general social, economic and political environment of mid-19th century Canada.
• Basic knowledge of conservation practices to competently perform a variety of duties associated with the monitoring and cleaning of artifacts.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
You have:
• Strong oral communication skills to engage visitors in the interpretation of a variety of family and domestic-related themes (e.g. meal preparation, food preservation, seasonality of life, agricultural, cultural and economic influences, etc.) and to respond effectively to customer questions and concerns.

INTERPRETIVE AND DOMESTIC SKILLS
You have:
• The ability to interpret the manner, appearance and role of a family member and to interpret domestic work.
• The ability to assist with the preparation and preservation of food, e.g. cooking on a cook stove or hearth, pickling, drying, canning, salting and butter churning.
• The ability to perform the tasks associated with keeping a household in the 1860’s, including laundry, washing dishes, sweeping, blacking stoves, etc.
• The ability to perform a wide range of handwork skills, e.g. quilting, sewing, knitting, needlework and rug making.
