ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMMER / PARK WORKER (student)
HOURS OF WORK:
variable hours to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week
Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary
$11.40 or $12.25 per hour
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT:
early-May to September 4, 2017
To greet and welcome customers and carry out a variety of environmental programming and park related duties at the Visitor Centre and the campground, responding to inquiries and providing site programming and information. Assist the Programming Officer in the implementation, organization, delivery and promotion of outdoor learning programs, special programs, guided walks, canoeing programs and visitor/customer services to maximize visitor enjoyment and satisfaction and/or activity areas and to keep nature trails and boardwalks safe. Duties also include camper registration, cash handling, cash register operation, credit card transactions, etc.; selling retail (in addition to wood and ice), upselling specialized products and dealing with inventory; garbage collection and waste recycling, minor repairs and painting of buildings; cutting and trimming grass; cleaning and maintenance of washrooms, shower buildings, Visitor Centre including flower beds; clean-up of aquatic vegetation, moving picnic tables; providing assistance at special events in the park; providing safety and security for visitors, facilities and other parks properties; promoting user compliance with park rules and regulations through public contact and routine/non-routine patrols; a limited number of positions will require tractor operation for park maintenance and grass mowing and completion of vehicle and equipment log books; completion of cleaning schedule forms, documentation of accidents and/or injuries in the workplace; greeting visitors to the park and providing information, maps and brochures.
Knowledge and/or experience in parks, outdoor recreation, environmental studies, local history, local natural resources, sports (i.e. canoeing, day-camp leader, camp counsellor, outdoor education, early childhood education, teacher/tutor, swimming instructor, coach, etc.); ability to effectively deliver programs to a large number of people of various ages and backgrounds; ability to perform physical duties in order to carry out various programs and activities on land and water; good planning and organizational skills and initiative to assist in the establishment of viable recreational and interpretive programs; limited number of positions may require the ability to operate equipment such as tractors, riding lawn mowers, string trimmers, small utility vehicles, etc.; ability to work independently or as part of a team; ability to write and prepare reports; ability to learn about Eastern Ontario tourism, valid driver’s licence; willingness to work variable shifts, including weekends, holidays, evenings and nights.
