PARK WORKER (student)
HOURS OF WORK:
variable hours to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week
$11.40 or $12.25 per hour
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT:
mid-May to September 4, 2017 OR mid-June to September 4, 2017
To greet and welcome visitors, respond to inquiries and provide site programming and services information, and carry out a variety of park-related duties and customer service initiatives. Duties may include the following: providing excellent customer service; collecting fees, processing reservations/registrations, cash handling, cash register operation, credit card transactions, balancing sales and closing paperwork; selling retail (in addition to wood and ice), upselling specialized products and dealing with inventory; cleaning and maintenance of washrooms, shower buildings and retail/registration buildings, including flower beds; garbage collection and waste recycling, cutting and trimming grass; clean-up of aquatic vegetation on beaches; minor repairs and painting of buildings; a limited number of positions will require tractor operation for park maintenance and grass mowing and completion of vehicle and equipment log books; moving picnic tables; providing assistance at special events in the parks; providing safety and security for the visitors, facilities and other parks properties; promoting user compliance with park rules and regulations through public contact and routine/non-routine patrols; completion of vehicle and equipment log books, cleaning schedule forms, documentation of accidents and/or injuries in the workplace; providing travel and tourist information to the public on The St. Lawrence Parks Commission’s other attractions and Eastern Ontario tourist attractions; performing other duties as assigned.
Ability and willingness to acquire a good knowledge of the operation of a park (day-use area and/or campground) in a short period of time; ability to sell products, programs and admissions and handle cash with a high degree of accuracy; knowledge of tourism; a high degree of integrity and ability to adapt to different situations; ability to operate a computerized reservation/registration system, cash register and bank/credit card machine; good communication and customer service skills to deal effectively with staff and the public; judgement to assess a crisis situation and determine the appropriate course of action; ability to enforce Parks regulations and rules; ability to write and prepare reports; physical ability to carry out a variety of park manual duties such as cleaning, grounds keeping, moving picnic tables, lifting garbage cans, bags of wood and ice, etc.; a limited number of positions may require the ability to operate equipment such as tractors,, string trimmers, small utility vehicles, etc.; ability to learn the contents of the Parks and Recreation Policy and Procedures Manual and the Emergency Procedures Manual; ability to learn about Eastern Ontario tourist attractions; valid driver’s licence may be required; willingness to work variable shifts including weekends, holidays, evenings and nights.
